The Facts
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups in the U.S., there are currently around 930 hate groups present. Although this may be hard to believe, the number of hate groups are increasing as opposed to decreasing. In 2000, there were only 602 hate groups and 194 militia and patriot groups. In 2008, the number of militia and patriot groups dropped to 149, but as soon as Obama was elected the number jumped to over 1000. Although these groups spread hatred, they usually do not turn to violence.
White Supremacist Groups Growing
"Barack Obama's election has inflamed racist extremists who see it as another sign that their country is under siege by nonwhites. The idea of a black man in the White House, combined with the deepening economic crisis and continuing high levels of Latino immigration, has given white supremacists a real platform on which to recruit," said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The number of hate groups in the U.S. has continued to rise over the years and has grown by 54% since 2000. The increase was particularly large in the last few years as a result of immigration fears, a failing economy, and Barack Obama's successful election to office. After Obama's election, white supremacist online activity began to spike with people posting racist messages to online forums. They claimed that Obama's presidency, the current immigration issues, and the recent economic crisis should cause many individuals to join the white supremacist movement.
